Christine Beatty’s memoir chronicles her odyssey from collegiate husband to transsexual prostitute, recovery from addiction, and the achievement of her most improbable dreams. Set mostly in the purgatory of San Francisco’s Tenderloin district, her story guides readers on an intimate journey through worlds of hippies, strippers, soldiers, urban transsexuals, prostitutes, addicts, jail, skid row and finally recovery. Ascending against all odds in her career, she is also a pioneering rock musician, a controversial journalist and a survivor of the worst pandemic of the 1980s. Told with the unflinching honesty of someone with nothing left to hide, the humor of a survivor who discovers silver linings in the darkest clouds, and the spirit of a rebel who refuses to be broken, Beatty’s is a tale of sublime pathos and the triumph of the human spirit. She proves you can’t keep a good woman down.

Good work for an indie publish. I can appreciate Christine's honesty and willingness to lay all her cards on the table. Knocking a star only because the writing (the writing, not the story) lacked a bit of "oomph" to keep me glued to the pages, but still, VERY well done. I wouldn't hesitate recommending Not Your Average American Girl to the non-bigoted reader with an interest in memoirs and/or sociology.

Not Your Average American Girl Christine Beatty 9780963740625 Books Reviews

A moving, powerful and candid book about gender identity, addiction and codependent relationships. Truly one of the best memoirs on any subject I've ever read.
I read American Girl on my . The author has a fine grasp of the art of writing. Her story, like that of many TG's, is often tragic, especially so in Christine's case. At times it nearly overwhelms one with sadness mixed with repulsion. Yet in the end it is a story of redemption.

I recommend this book to any of unsure sex, or to any who may want a glimpse into that existence.

Any complaints? Well, only one, really. Throughout the book Christine dances with God. Does He love her, or hate her? Does He expect her to be male, or female. Does He exist, and if not, why does she exist? And in the end, apparently, Christine embraces God as her savior,

Please! For forty years or so of life, Christine's acquaintances, friends, and lovers face hate, addiction, and mostly death. So where was her God through all of this? Did He hate all of them, but love only Christine? If so, why?

I've faced being TG quite well without the need for God. Sorry, Christine, but there's no real reason to believe in this God of yours. Yes, the thought that He exists makes you happy. But is that alone sufficient reason to believe a fairy tale? Why, after so many thousands of years, is there absolutely no proof?

With or without God, our world is beautiful! And redemption, without God, does happen.
very sad and moving.her courage and determination made me cry many times.i am wishing her many happy and healthy years.thank you for educating me on this tragic condition and the suffering endured due to gullible and ignorant peoples.
Christine Beatty has written her story of survival survival on the streets as a sex worker, survival of drug addiction, HIV, the loss of her fingertips in a PCP-fueled haze. Oh, and she survived her gender identity disorder. This is an inspiring tale of someone who took every wrong turn in life, yet managed to triumph over her demons in the end. A great read that was hard to put down.
great self autobio from this hussy. she tells it like it was to work the streets of san francisco in the past and just getting into it. brought it here and it was e-delivered quickly and fast. going back to read it when i have a chance to read a coupe of chapters nonstop.
Christine recants the story of her coming-to-age in gruesome vivid detail. You will more than likely see a little bit of your own upbringing written on these pages if you have ever struggled with being accepted for being different than the norm. It doesn't get more hardcore and honest than this -- she tells you the good, the bad, and the ugly memories. Thankfully growing up transgender is much more bearable today, especially in San Francisco, but it wasn't always this way.
Christine needs to write more books! I'm a heterosexual, married GG and this book was incredibly powerful to me. Christine's battle to claim her sexual and psychological gender identity is easy to relate to on many levels, if you've ever struggled to define yourself in a "vanilla" world (as she calls it). I laughed and cried and cheered Christine on through all of her wars, big and small. She's a formidable woman--a highly intelligent, non-conformist thinker and a fabulous author. Highly recommended!
