The art of race navigation in the age of computers and navigation software is very different to even a decade ago. While a multitude of books exist on coastal and celestial navigation, very few can be found that deal with the specialist area of race navigation. This book fills that void. It is a practical, hands-on book that provides detailed instruction and tips on Race Navigation using Expedition, one of the most widely used race navigation software packages available today.
Information is provided on setting up a navigation station, deck screens, instrument calibration, accessing weather information, short course racing, starting, offshore routing, tracking the opposition, sail charts, and performance analysis. Web links are provided throughout the book to allow the reader to visit the relevant web sites as they read through the book. Recommended reading and key web sites are provided at the end of the book.
The book is structured so that it can be read from start to finish in a logical progression. Nonetheless, it is considered more likely that readers will be looking for advice on a specific function or feature within Expedition. For this reason the chapters also try to stand on their own where possible.

Will shares his considerable experience and insight on navigation in an approachable and easy-to-read manner that is both instructive and informative. Sailors of all levels of skill will find useful knowledge contained in this book. I simply can't recommend this book enough. In fact, since I teach at US Sailing Safety-at-Sea seminars, I will personally recommend that this book is read in connection with my presentation. This book is a must read for racing sailors, but especially navigators, tacticians and skippers. Lew

Modern Race Navigation Expedition Software in Action eBook Will Oxley Reviews

If you have Expedition software, or thinking about it, this is a must read. It's the best book out there for the modern nav/tac. Sadly only available in . Colour illustrations aren't great on a B&W . When the hardcover comes out, I'll but that too!!
Modern yacht race navigation has been developed over the past 20 years, but you typically needed to be part of a major campaign to really develop the fundamentals and details. Over the past 5 years or so, and more recently, the past two years, these techniques have been presented openly allowing more programs to effectively apply them. This is the first comprehensive text that explains the fundamentals, along with expert tips for specific applications. It's well written, easy to read, and packed with details and insights. The effort to compile this is greatly appreciated.
Will Oxley has written the book we have all been looking for! The art of modern navigation has changed so much over the last 10 years that up to now unless you have the privilege of sailing with a very high end race program it is very hard to understand all gear that is available, much less how to get the most out of it. If you use Expedition Routing and Navigation software, or even if you don't, this is the must have book. Will lays out all the basics; how to set up your nav station, what a good navigator's duties and responsibilities are, the gear you need, and most importantly how to get the most out of it. If you are, or want to be, an ocean racing navigator you want to read this book!
This book is required reading for any user of Expedition software. (Actually, for any offshore or performance navigator.) It's easy to read, deep, explains not only how-to but also WHY. If you spend $1,500 on software, then for goodness sake spend $25 on a good users manual! If the skipper bought the software for the boat, and you want to be the naviguesser, well then read this book and guess less.

Ox-meister knows his stuff and shares a huge amount of information which was previously "insider only". He's lived and breathed this software for months on end. Any single trick you gain from this book is worth the price. He offers dozens. It's a no-brainer to get this book if you use the software.
As an experienced but intermediate level sailor, trying to learn/apply Expedition on OPB (with only sporadic access) over the last two race seasons has been difficult - this book will be a great help (I've read it thru once). Some questions that took me days or weeks to answer over the past two seasons, would have been easily answered if I'd had this book. Outstanding book, can't wait to apply it this coming year. I may not fully master Expedition, but I expect to make far more progress!
The focus is on latest technology, and indeed this is the now classic treatment of the subject, but there is also much information on the details and value of standard good practice in navigation that reflects the expertise and experience of the author. Throughout the book we learn specifics of hardware and software, as well as fundamentals on the role of the navigator and daily procedures. Highly recommended to all navigators, on or off of the race course.
I am an avid user of Expedition on our Texas based J/109. Expedition is not exactly easy to use, the software's scope is astonishing and a bit overwhelming. Modern Race Navigation is a highly readable survey of Expedition's use in serious offshore racing and is full of tips for racing navigators. I flagged a total of 59 "things to do" or to investigate further; the book is simply full of valuable information and good ideas. I found the section on coastal navigation sobering, I did not realize the potential serious inaccuracy of GPS. I ended up changing my GPS feed into Expedition so I can more closely monitor GPS accuracy. The section on calibration was comprehensive and relevant to most high end instrument systems. I particularly enjoyed the use of Expedition in determining the optimum offshore route for a race taking into account not only weather but current.
I cannot wait for the next edition of this book, hopefully Will will add more details of how to get the most out of race boat instrumentation.
